AMBIKA AND RYAN

October 2020, January 2021, February 2021

A multi-cultural celebration across time and circumstance.

“In Chinese mythology, there is a belief that two people who are destined to marry are bound by an invisible red thread that will bring them together – regardless of place, time, or circumstance. Being a half-Chinese ‘South boy,’ Chinese culture has been an important part of my life despite growing up in a predominantly Western society. For me, honour, tradition, and family are very important. So, it is no surprise that my red string was bound to Ambika – a Hindu ‘North girl’ who holds dear the same value of family and tradition.

Sharing many mutual friends and even attending the University of the West Indies around the same time would have given us ample opportunities for a ‘near meeting’ but in true 21st century love-story fashion, it would be conversations on social media that would eventually bring us together. On the 21st of December 2018, I proposed to her on the Great Wall of China, during a trip to my ancestral home.

Ambika wholly embraced my culture and was a firm advocate for celebrating it in our union, in addition to our already mixed faith marriage. We had initially hoped to do everything in July 2020, but the pandemic had other ideas. As such, we had three ceremonies strewn over time – whenever ‘lock down’ measures permitted. Fortunately for us, we are blessed with the best family, friends and vendors that allowed us to make this possible. We had:

  1. A traditional Chinese Tea Ceremony on the 11th of October 2020.
  2. A traditional Hindu wedding on the 30th of January 2021
  3. A Traditional Catholic wedding and Chinese Reception on the 7th of February 2021.

We are thrilled to share them with you as we celebrate our official one-year anniversary. True love knows no limits and transcends all circumstances; a wedding – far less three – may not. Ambika and I are eternally grateful to all involved in making the celebrations of our union possible and an unforgettable series of events. Thank you!”- Ryan
